Some children have epilepsy that doesn't get better with medication. Doctors call this "drug-resistant epilepsy." This study looked at whether a special high-fat, low-carb eating plan called the ketogenic diet can help reduce their seizures.
The researchers gathered eight high-quality studies (published between 2011 and 2020) where children were randomly placed into two groups: one followed the ketogenic diet, and the other did not.
The results were clear: about half of the kids on the ketogenic diet (around 48%) either stopped having seizures completely or had at least half as many seizures within three months. Children who weren't on the diet improved much less.
Bottom line: When epilepsy medicines aren't working, the ketogenic diet is a real, effective option that can meaningfully reduce seizures in kids.
