New research confirms why flexible keto works: decanoic acid from MCT oils directly blocks AMPA receptors in the brain, calming the overactivity that triggers seizures. This means kids can follow modified, higher-carb ketogenic plans — easier to stick with, fewer side effects — and still get real seizure protection.

A 2022 pilot study found that adding MCT oil twice daily to a regular, unrestricted diet — no strict keto required — reduced seizures in adults with drug-resistant epilepsy. Side effects were mild (nausea, loose stools). It's promising early evidence that flexible MCT supplementation can deliver real seizure protection without dietary extremes.

A study of 30 children with drug-resistant epilepsy compared the classic ketogenic diet to the more flexible Modified Atkins Diet (MAD). Both worked impressively — over 53% of MAD kids became completely seizure-free, and the rest cut seizures by half or more. Lipid levels stayed safe. Flexibility doesn't compromise the results.

Potential Seizure Reduction
According to the International Ketogenic Diet Study Group's expert consensus (Kossoff et al., Epilepsia Open, 2018), specialized nutritional therapies are well-established treatments for childhood epilepsy when delivered under careful medical supervision.
Clinical Research Findings and Insights
Research shows that the ketogenic diet is a key option for children whose epilepsy doesn't get better with regular medicine. More than half of these kids see a big drop in seizures within the first three months of starting the diet.

Adding MCT oils to the diet is a proven way to help the body make more ketones. Because MCT oils boost ketones on their own, families can include a wider range of foods at mealtimes, making the diet easier to live with day-to-day, while still protecting the brain and keeping seizures under control.

Studies show that kids on these special diets don't just have fewer seizures, they often think more clearly and connect better with others too. This likely happens because the carefully planned meals give the body the steady energy it needs to work well.
